Moonshot: play Hearts online free

Pass three cards, duck the queen of spades and maybe shoot the moon. Classic four-player Hearts against the computer, friends online or on one screen.

What is Moonshot Hearts?

Moonshot is classic Hearts for four players, dealt fresh in your browser. Pass three cards, follow suit, and slip your dangerous cards onto someone else's trick. Every heart you take costs a point and the queen of spades costs thirteen, so the lowest score wins when someone reaches 100.

Play against the computer at four levels, from a forgiving Easy to an Insane opponent that reads the table like a pro. Sit down with friends at an online table, where computer players fill any empty seat, or pass one screen around with your cards hidden between turns. A fresh daily deal gives everyone the same cards each day.

How to play Moonshot Hearts

  1. Each player gets 13 cards. Before the hand, choose three to pass: to the left, then to the right, then across, then a hand with no passing.
  2. Whoever holds the two of clubs leads it to start the first trick.
  3. Follow the suit that was led if you can. If you can't, play any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick and leads next.
  4. No points can be played on the first trick unless you hold nothing else.
  5. Hearts can't be led until a heart has been played on another suit (hearts are broken), unless your hand is all hearts.
  6. Each heart you take is 1 point and the queen of spades is 13. Take all 26 and you shoot the moon: you score nothing and everyone else takes 26.

Moonshot Hearts tips and strategy

  • Pass the queen of spades unless you hold four or more low spades to hide her behind, and think twice about keeping the ace or king of spades.
  • Try to empty a suit early. Once you're void, you can throw your high cards and points whenever that suit is led.
  • Keep a few low cards in every suit, so you can duck under a trick that's collecting points.
  • Watch who is taking every point. If one player has all of them late in a hand, take a single heart yourself to stop them shooting the moon.

The four computer levels

Easy plays almost any legal card, so it often walks into the queen. Medium ducks under tricks and dumps its high cards when it can. Hard counts every card played, remembers who is void in which suit, passes like an expert and watches for a moon shot. Insane deals the unseen cards out hundreds of ways that fit everything it knows, plays each choice to the end of the hand and keeps the one that scores best. Hints use the Hard player: two a hand on Easy, one on Medium and Hard, none on Insane.

Daily deal and leaderboards

The daily deal is four hands, one of each pass, with the same cards for everyone that day against Hard computer players. Take the fewest points to climb the day's board. Wins against the computer, wins against Insane and your best winning streak against Insane each have a leaderboard, and online wins have their own.

Play Hearts online with friends

Choose Online, then Quick match or Invite friends and send the link or code. The host picks the target score and the level of the computer players who fill the empty seats. The cards are dealt on our server and each player only ever receives their own hand, so nobody can peek, and a friend who arrives late takes over a computer player's seat.

Moonshot Hearts FAQ

Is Moonshot Hearts free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no download and no account needed.

How do you play Hearts?

Four players each get 13 cards and pass three. Follow suit when you can, and try not to win tricks that hold hearts or the queen of spades. Each heart is a point and the queen is 13; the lowest score when someone reaches 100 wins.

What does shooting the moon mean in Hearts?

Taking every heart and the queen of spades in one hand. You score nothing for that hand and every other player takes 26 points.

Who leads first in Hearts?

The player holding the two of clubs leads it to the first trick. After that, whoever wins a trick leads the next one.

When can you lead hearts?

Only after hearts are broken, meaning someone has played a heart on a trick of another suit, or when you hold nothing but hearts.

How does passing work in Hearts?

Before each hand everyone passes three cards: to the left on the first hand, to the right on the second, across on the third and not at all on the fourth, then the cycle repeats.

Can you play points on the first trick?

No. On the first trick you can't play a heart or the queen of spades unless your hand has nothing else.

How many points is the queen of spades worth?

Thirteen, as much as half the hearts in the deck put together. Passing her away or dropping her on someone else's trick is the heart of the game.

Can I play Hearts online with friends?

Yes. Choose Online, tap Invite friends and share the link or code. Computer players fill any empty seats, so even two friends can play a full four-player game.

Is there a daily Hearts challenge?

Yes. The daily deal gives everyone the same four hands each day against Hard computer players, with a leaderboard for the fewest points taken.
