What is Dragonrun Tiến Lên?

Dragonrun is Tiến Lên (often written Tien Len), the Vietnamese climbing card game, played by Southern rules in your browser. Four players get thirteen cards each and race to get rid of them. Beat the last play with a higher single, pair, triple, sequence or run of pairs, or pass and wait for the next round.

Tap the cards you want to play and the game tells you at once what combination they make and whether it beats the table. Play the computer at four levels, open an online table where computer players fill empty seats, or pass one screen around with everyone's cards hidden between turns. A daily deal gives everyone the same four deals each day.

How to play Dragonrun Tiến Lên

Cards rank 3 (lowest) up to king, ace and 2 (highest). Within a rank, suits rank spades, clubs, diamonds, hearts, so the 3♠ is the lowest card and the 2♥ the highest.
The player with the 3♠ starts the first deal, and the first play must include it. Later deals start with the last winner.
Play a single, a pair, a triple, four of a kind, a sequence of three or more ranks in a row, or a double sequence of three or more pairs in a row. Twos can't be part of a sequence.
Each player in turn beats the last play with the same kind and length of combination but a higher top card, or passes. Once you pass, you're out until the round ends.
When everyone else has passed, the last player to play starts a new round with any combination.
Bombs chop twos: three pairs in a row beat a single 2, four of a kind beats a single 2 or a pair of 2s, and four pairs in a row beat a pair of 2s or four of a kind.

Dragonrun Tiến Lên tips and strategy

Plan your hand as a few big combinations. Fewer plays to make means fewer rounds you need to win.
Lead your low singles and pairs early, while others are still keeping their high cards.
Save your twos and bombs to win back the lead late, when you can follow with your last combination.
When a rival is down to one card, stop leading singles. Lead pairs or sequences, or your highest single.

Instant wins and scoring

Some deals are won before a card is played: four twos, a dragon (one of every rank from 3 to ace), five pairs in a row, or six pairs. Otherwise players keep going until three have gone out. First place scores 3 points, second 2, third 1 and last nothing. Play a single deal, or a match to 10 or 21 points.

The four computer levels

Easy plays whatever comes to hand and passes often. Medium sorts its hand into combinations and leads its weakest first. Hard plans the whole hand, keeps twos and bombs to win the lead back, and plays differently when a rival is close to going out. Insane deals the unseen cards out many ways and plays each choice through to the end of the deal. Hints use the Hard player: two a hand on Easy, one on Medium and Hard, none on Insane.

How do you play Tien Len?

Each of four players gets 13 cards. Take turns beating the last play with a higher combination of the same kind, or pass. The first to play all their cards wins the deal.

What is the highest card in Tien Len?

The 2 of hearts. Twos are the highest rank, and hearts are the highest suit, followed by diamonds, clubs and spades.

What beats a 2 in Tien Len?

A higher 2, or a bomb. Three pairs in a row or four of a kind chop a single 2; four of a kind or four pairs in a row chop a pair of 2s.

Who goes first in Tien Len?

The player holding the 3 of spades starts the first deal and must include it in the first play. Later deals are started by the winner of the deal before.

What happens when you pass in Tien Len?

You sit out the rest of that round and can't play again until someone wins it and a new round starts.

What is an instant win in Tien Len?

A deal won at once because of the cards dealt: four twos, a dragon from 3 to ace, five pairs in a row, or six pairs.

Can a sequence include a 2?

No. Twos can be played as singles, pairs, triples or four of a kind, but never inside a sequence or a run of pairs.

Is Tien Len the same as Thirteen?

Yes. Tiến Lên is often called Thirteen in English, after the thirteen cards each player is dealt. It is related to other climbing games where you race to shed your cards.

Can I play Tien Len with friends?
