Comet Drift: a one-button 3D drifting game

A one-button 3D drifting game on roads in the sky: hold to drift into the bend, let go to grip. 100 levels in ten worlds, an endless road, a daily road and eight cars to unlock.

What is Comet Drift?

Comet Drift is a free one-button 3D drifting game that runs in your browser. Your car races along a road floating high above the clouds. Hold the screen, the mouse button or Space and the car drifts into the bend, whichever way the road turns. Let go and the tyres grip and the car steers itself gently back to the middle of the road. Hold too long and you slide off the edge into the sky.

That one button goes a long way. A long drift charges a boost that fires when you let go, ramps throw you over gaps in the road, ice keeps you sliding, mud drags you down, rocks and sliding blocks sit in your way, and narrow bridges leave no room at all. Play 100 levels in ten worlds, from Sunrise Isles to the Comet's Tail, an endless road that gets faster the further you go, or the daily road, the same for everyone today.

How to play Comet Drift

  1. Hold the screen, the mouse button, Space or an arrow key to drift: the car turns into the bend, left or right, whichever way the road goes.
  2. Let go and the car grips and steers itself back toward the middle of the road, but only gently. Gentle bends need nothing; sharp bends need a drift. A short tap is a small nudge.
  3. Drifting slows the car. Hold a drift long enough and it charges a boost: blue sparks, then orange, then purple. Let go to fire it.
  4. Off the edge, short of the landing on a jump, or into a rock or a slider and you fall. In a level you start again from the last checkpoint and the clock keeps running; on the endless and daily roads the run ends.
  5. Each level gives up to three stars: one for reaching the finish, one for beating the target time, and one more for beating it with all three comet shards collected.
  6. Collect stardust along the road to unlock new cars in the garage. Every car drives the same.
  7. Press P or Escape, or the pause button, to pause. The game pauses by itself when you switch tabs.

Comet Drift tips and strategy

  • Start each drift a moment before the bend, and let go as the road straightens. Late drifts are what take you over the edge.
  • If you are unsure, let go. The car always heads back to the middle of the road when you are not holding.
  • Short taps fix your line without losing speed. Save the long drifts for hairpins and for charging boosts.
  • Before a ramp, let go and let the car straighten up. You can't steer in the air.
  • On ice, start the drift early and let go early: the car keeps sliding after you release.
  • Rocks and sliders always leave a way through: the middle of the road, or the side a drift takes you. Watch which one is clear.
  • Mud slows you right down, which makes the bend after it easier. Don't fight it.
  • Comet shards often sit on the inside of a bend. A slightly longer drift picks them up.

One button, a lot of driving

Comet Drift is built around a single control. Holding drifts the car into the bend and lets the back end swing out; letting go makes the tyres grip and pulls the car back to the middle of the road. Getting round a sharp bend is about when you start the drift and when you let go, and the further you get, the faster the car goes and the less room there is for a late release.

100 levels in ten worlds

The levels are split into ten worlds, each with its own sky and its own idea. Sunrise Isles teaches the drift on wide roads; Cloud Coast adds boost pads and chicanes; Canyon Skyway adds ramps over gaps; Frostbite Ring adds ice; Meteor Fields puts rocks on the road; Neon Night adds sliding blocks; Mudslide Mesa adds mud and switchbacks; Aurora Bridges narrows the road; Nebula Rush mixes everything at speed; and the Comet's Tail is the longest and fastest of all.

Every level has two checkpoints, three comet shards to collect and a target time. Three stars means beating the target with all three shards. Every road has been driven from start to finish by a test driver that only holds and lets go, so every level can be finished without a fall.

Boosts, jumps and hazards

A long drift charges a boost that fires when you let go, and boost pads on the road give you one for free. Ramps launch you over gaps, ice keeps you sliding after you let go, mud slows you down, rocks and sliders block part of the road, and narrow bridges leave no room for a wide line. Stardust lines the road, and collecting it unlocks new cars.

Endless road and daily road

The endless road never ends. It starts gently and gets faster and trickier the further you drive, and the sky changes as you go. The daily road is the same for every player on the same day and changes at midnight UTC. Your best on each goes on the Rocket Games leaderboards.

Eight cars to unlock

The garage has eight cars: the Comet, Bolt, the Dune Buggy, Nova, the Rocket, the Saucer, Neon and the Golden Comet. They are earned by collecting stardust, earning stars, clearing worlds and driving far on the endless road. Every car handles the same, so pick the one you like the look of.

On phones, tablets and computers

Comet Drift works in portrait and landscape, with touch, mouse, keyboard or a game controller. The graphics quality adjusts itself to keep the game smooth, and your progress is kept in your browser.

Comet Drift FAQ

Is Comet Drift free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser with no download, no account and no ads in the game. Cars are unlocked by playing, never bought.

How do you drift?

Hold the screen, the mouse button or Space. The car always drifts into the bend, so you never pick a direction, only when to start and when to stop. Let go and it grips and steers back to the middle.

How many levels are there?

100 levels in ten worlds of ten: Sunrise Isles, Cloud Coast, Canyon Skyway, Frostbite Ring, Meteor Fields, Neon Night, Mudslide Mesa, Aurora Bridges, Nebula Rush and the Comet's Tail. Each world brings in something new, such as ramps, ice, rocks, sliders, mud or narrow bridges.

What happens when I fall?

In a level you are put back at the last checkpoint and the clock keeps running, so you can always finish. On the endless and daily roads one fall ends the run.

Can I play on a phone?

Yes. It is a one-button game, so holding the screen works just as well as a mouse or keyboard, in portrait or landscape.

Is there a leaderboard?

Yes. Your best endless road, your best daily road and your total level stars go on the Rocket Games leaderboards. Create a free account to keep them on every device.
