Starfall Sector: Free Space Shooter Game
An arcade space shooter: squadrons swoop in, form up and dive at you. Salvage gun pods from derelict drones, beat six bosses and fly to the heart of the fall.
What is Starfall Sector?
Starfall Sector is a free arcade space shooter you play right in your browser. Squadrons of alien machines sweep onto the screen along curving flight paths, settle into a breathing formation above you, then peel off one by one, and later in tight escorted groups, to dive-bomb your starfighter. Your ship flies along the bottom of the screen with a little room to move up and down. Shoot them out of the sky, dodge their fire and clear the formation to reach the next stage.
The twist is Salvage. Some enemies are derelict drones, grey and flickering, each carrying a gun pod. Shoot one until it goes dark, stop shooting, and fly into the falling wreck to dock its pod to your ship. You can carry two pods: a Spread pod adds a three-way fan of bolts, a Lance pod fires a piercing beam that cuts through a whole line of ships, a Seeker pod launches homing micro-missiles, and an Aegis pod projects a shield that soaks up a hit. When you are hit, a pod is knocked loose instead of costing you a ship, and you can catch it again as it drifts away.
The Campaign has 60 stages across six sectors: the burning Ember Veil nebula, the ice belts of the Halcyon Rings, the tumbling rocks of the Cinder Belt, the lightning of the Static Expanse, the hulks of the Graveyard Drift and finally the Heart of the Fall. Each sector adds new enemies, from crystal Prisms that split in two and shielded Bulwarks that guard their wingmates to Spotter snipers, cloaking Phantoms, Tether mines that drag your ship sideways, Carriers that launch fighters, Mirror ships that copy your moves and Menders that repair the fleet. A mini-boss waits halfway through every sector and a multi-phase boss at the end, each a huge machine with weak points to break and attacks that change as it falls apart.
Between the fights come bonus waves that don't shoot back, where every group you wipe out adds to a Perfect bonus, plus hazards such as asteroids, mines, laser gates and ion storms that kill the lights so you see only what your own shots illuminate. Pick up rapid fire, an overcharge beam, a time-slowing stasis field, smart bombs and the odd extra ship. Endless mode keeps the waves coming for a pure score attack, and the Daily run is a ten-stage gauntlet that is the same for everyone each day, with its own leaderboard.
It is free, needs no download or account, and plays with a keyboard, a gamepad, a mouse or a finger on a phone, with four difficulties from a gentle Easy to a punishing Nightmare. The graphics are drawn live with lit, normal-mapped ships, glowing lasers and bloom, and every note of the music is synthesized in your browser.
How to play Starfall Sector
- Choose Campaign, Endless or Daily, pick a difficulty and press Launch.
- Fly with the arrow keys or W, A, S and D and hold Space to fire, or turn on auto-fire in Settings. On a phone or tablet, drag anywhere on the screen: your ship follows your finger's movement and fires on its own. Gamepads work too.
- Shoot the enemies as they fly in and while they hold formation. Ships that break away and dive at you are worth double points.
- Look out for grey derelict drones. Shoot one until it goes dark, then stop firing at it and fly into the falling wreck to dock its gun pod. You can carry two pods at once.
- When you are hit, a pod is knocked off instead of losing a ship. Fly into it as it drifts away to dock it again. With no pods left, a hit costs a ship.
- Collect power-ups that drop from destroyed ships, and press X (or tap the bomb button) for a smart bomb that clears every bullet on screen.
- Clear every ship to finish a stage. Each sector ends with a boss: break its glowing weak points first, then destroy its core.
- Press P or Escape to pause and M to mute.
Starfall Sector tips and strategy
- Salvage early. A Spread pod in the first stage makes the whole first sector easier, and two pods give you two free hits before you can lose a ship.
- Stop shooting a drone once it goes dark. The wreck takes a few more hits before it breaks up for scrap points instead of docking, so move aside, let it fall, then slide under it.
- Mix your pods: Lance and Seeker together handle both lines of ships and fast divers, while an Aegis pod soaks a hit every few seconds on its own.
- Shoot divers down one after another to build the dive chain: three in a row double your points, six triple them and ten quadruple them. Your gun keeps only two bolts in the air at once (three on Easy), so line up a shot instead of spraying: a miss costs you time.
- Shoot an escorted group out of the sky together while it dives for a group bonus. Watch the last few ships of every stage: they get frantic and keep coming straight back at you.
- Take out Menders and Bulwarks first: Menders rebuild ships you destroyed, and Bulwarks shield the ships beside them.
- When a Spotter stops and paints you with a red line, move sideways before it fires. When a Tether anchors, shoot it to break the pull.
- Save smart bombs for boss fights and crowded dives. A bomb also damages every ship and boss part on screen.
- On bosses, armoured parts shimmer blue: they can't be hurt until the boss reaches the phase that exposes them.
- In the ion storm, watch for the glowing strike markers on the ground before lightning hits.
The six sectors and their bosses
Every sector has its own look, music and new enemies. The Ember Veil nebula ends with Cindermaw, a crescent dreadnought with horn batteries and a burning eye. The Halcyon Rings end with the Halo Regent, a ring station whose shield panels orbit its core. The Cinder Belt ends with the Quarry Leviathan, a mining machine that swings drill arms and throws rocks. The Static Expanse ends with the Tempest Engine, a storm coil that fires laser columns and chain lightning. The Graveyard Drift ends with the Ossuary, a carrier hulk with hangar bays and broadside guns. The Heart of the Fall ends with the Starheart, guarded by two spinning shells.
Halfway through each sector a mini-boss waits: the Twin Lamplighters, the Facet crystal that splits apart, the Rock Hauler and its asteroid, the Shade that flickers in and out of sight, the Foundry that builds ships, and Echo, a great mirror that fires every time you do.
Salvage pods explained
Derelict drones each carry one of four gun pods, shown by the coloured marker on the drone: gold for Spread, cyan for Lance, pink for Seeker and green for Aegis. Disable the drone with ordinary fire, then fly into the wreck before it falls off the screen. A damaged drone caught in a mine blast is wrecked for good, so gentle fire is the way to salvage; smart bombs spare drones.
With two pods already docked, a new pod replaces the one on the side you touched it with, and the old one is traded in for bonus points. Pods stack: two Spread pods make a wider fan, two Seeker pods fire twice the missiles and two Aegis pods recharge their shield faster.
Modes, difficulty and scoring
Campaign mode is the full 60-stage journey. If your last ship is lost, you can continue from the start of the sector you reached, keeping half your score. Endless mode cycles through all six sectors and their bosses, getting tougher every loop. The Daily run is ten stages built from that day's date, so everyone plays the same waves, theme and twist.
Easy gives you five ships and slower, sparser fire; Normal three ships; Hard faster bullets and more divers; Nightmare two ships against a fleet that never lets up. Within a run the game also adapts: clear stages cleanly and the enemy gets more aggressive, take hits and it eases off a little. Points are scaled by difficulty, so a Nightmare score is worth chasing.
Controls and playing on phones
On a computer, use the arrow keys or W, A, S and D to fly, Space to fire, X for a smart bomb, P or Escape to pause and M to mute. You can also hold the left mouse button and drag. A gamepad works with the left stick or D-pad, A to fire and B for a bomb.
On a phone, drag anywhere: the ship moves with your finger's movement rather than jumping under it, so your thumb never hides the action, and your guns fire automatically. Tap the round button for a smart bomb. Full screen gives the biggest view, and the game pauses itself when you switch apps.
Starfall Sector FAQ
Is Starfall Sector free to play?
Yes. It is free in your browser with no download, no account and no ads inside the game.
How do I get gun pods in Starfall Sector?
Shoot a grey derelict drone until it goes dark, then stop shooting it and fly into the falling wreck to dock its pod. You can carry two pods: Spread, Lance, Seeker or Aegis.
Can I play this space shooter on my phone?
Yes. Drag anywhere on the screen to fly; your ship follows your finger's movement and fires automatically. Tap the bomb button for a smart bomb, and use Full screen for the biggest view.
How many levels and bosses are there?
The Campaign has 60 stages in six sectors. Each sector has a mini-boss and ends with a big multi-phase boss, so there are twelve boss fights, plus bonus waves and hazard stages.
What happens when I lose all my ships?
In the Campaign you can continue from the start of the sector you reached, keeping half your score. You can also resume a run at the start of the stage you left if you close the page.
What are the controls on a computer?
Arrow keys or WASD to fly, Space to fire (or turn on auto-fire), X for a smart bomb, P or Escape to pause and M to mute. Gamepads and mouse dragging work too.
What is the Daily run?
A ten-stage run built from the date, so everyone plays the same waves, theme and twist that day. It has its own leaderboard.
Which difficulty should I pick?
Start on Easy or Normal: the first sector teaches salvage and diving enemies. Hard and Nightmare add faster bullets and more attackers, and their scores are worth more on the leaderboard.
Does the game save my progress?
Yes. Your best scores, stats, settings and a checkpoint to continue from are saved in your browser on this device. Sign in on the site to keep your best scores on the leaderboards.
